National Trust might be better known for objecting to major infrastructure projects rather than building them, so it may come as a surprise to learn that the charity has completed a significant renewable energy project in one of the most protected parts of the UK. But the Hafod y Llan farm in Snowdonia, this year’s winner of the BusinessGreen Leaders Renewable Energy Project Award, aims to provide the ultimate example of how well-managed clean energy developments can be delivered while having a minimal impact on the local environment. National Trust has now partnered with Good Energy and is hoping to generate up to £4m a year by selling renewable energy from nearly 40 projects across its estates. As such, Hafod y Llan is not just an inspiring clean energy project, it looks set to the spark off a major new green venture for one of the UK’s most popular and influential charities.
