Earlier this week, the government confirmed people living near to commercial renewable energy projects will be able to buy stakes in them for as little as £5, making it easier for local communities to benefit financially from renewable energy projects in their neighbourhood. Now the government is planning to build on the new strategy and is expected to next week unveil another package of measures designed to encourage community groups to fund their own renewables schemes. The aim is to simultaneously challenge opposition to wind farms, give consumers more power to take control of their energy bills, and help people share the financial benefits that come from infrastructure projects.
