Many of Britain’s largest cities have signed a pledge to slash carbon emissions by 2050 by sourcing 100 per cent green energy, in a move designed to highlight Labour’s commitment to accelerating the transition to a low carbon economy. The leaders of more than 50 Labour-run councils, including Edinburgh, Manchester and Liverpool, have pledged to move to green energy in their areas. Labour said the commitments, which will also see Newcastle, Leeds, Nottingham, Glasgow and a host of other urban centre switch to green energy supplies, would single-handedly cut the UK’s carbon footprint by 10 per cent. “Where Labour is in power we will push for a clean energy boom even if the government will not,” Lisa Nandy, shadow energy and climate change secretary and coordinator of the pledge, told The Guardian. “Ministers say they support devolution to our towns and cities so they should back these council leaders by ending their attack on the schemes that can help to make this safer, cleaner future a reality.”
